You deserve to know where your money goes.
You want to do good. And it’s easier said than done. When words like “ethical”, and “eco-friendly” are being thrown around everywhere, how can you spot which ones are walking the talk?
Here’s a truth they don’t want you to know: Not everyone does what they say.
Sustainability has become a buzzword. Without any regulations or accountability on what companies can claim, we risk continuing business as usual without actual change.
Our business model is proof that there is a different way of doing business. That you can rise without exploiting others. That you can be a force for good and make a difference, the kind of impact that changes lives. And we don't just say it.
That's why we took the long, hard road of getting third party certifications.
Because we believe you deserve better.
In 2022, we became the first fashion company in Indonesia to be B Corp certified: Currently the highest third-party certification of transparency and business practices for social and environmental impact in the world.
Raising the bar by joining a global movement of companies who go beyond just making profits, such as Patagonia, Allbirds, Veja, and Eileen Fisher.
Our verified impact in Indonesia’s villages even won us the B Corp Best for the World™️:
Meaning our verifiable community impact is at the top 5% of B Corporations globally.
(It's like receiving an Oscar for responsible companies!)
Not only Handcrafted, but
The fact that something was andmade doesn't immediately mean it's ethical.
Most women who make your clothes are hidden between complex layers of outsourcing.
With virtually no legal framework to protect their rights, they are the most vulnerable
when it comes to exploitative practices.
So how can you tell whether your purchase is really making a difference or whether it's just feel-good marketing?
Compliance with 100+ Standards
Together with some of the foremost leaders of social compliance and labor rights, Nest has created a framework of 100+ standards for assessing ethical practices:
Fair wages, including how they are calculated and paid.
No child labor.
Worker rights, such as regular breaks, the right to unionise, sick leave.
Anti-harassment and anti-discrimination policies for all.
Workplace safety, including fire extinguishers, first-aid stations, and emergency exits in Rumah SukkhaCittas.
The highest environmental stewardship.
Showing that we really do use the most natural, traceable plant dyes there are and employ responsible water management.
Providing living wages, verified on the ground
A living wage is the minimum our craftswomen need to cover her family's basic needs such as housing, food, education for their kids & healthcare.
To calculate it, we collect data from our village communities on their average household spending every month.
We convert this number into piece rates; Measuring the average time it takes our Ibus to create a fabric— so we can ensure the very piece that becomes your most meaningful clothes really do provide living wages to all the hands that made it.
Nest reviewed our practices and verified that our living wage calculation consistently provides our Ibus with incomes above the local minimum wages in every region!
Our Ethically Handcrafted™ certification ensures that your choice really does create change for women in rural Indonesia while upholding the highest environmental and labour standards in the world.
Now that’s something you can be proud of.
For us, being certified is not the goal. It’s a start.
Even after we’re certified, we continue to do what we do best: looking for problems and finding even better solutions to stitch even more positive impact into what you wear.
Whenever you invest in a #MadeRight piece, you make it possible for us to go beyond. From scaling our regenerative farming projects, training more Ibus, and building more craft schools.
We hope that this step will encourage more brands to clean up their practices - and make the public more critical towards the claims of fast fashion. Because it takes all of us to turn fashion into an industry that respects both women and the planet.
Will you join us?
